Ferry to hike fares, citing fuel prices

Higher fuel costs will pump up fares at SeaStreak America, the ferry service between Highlands-Atlantic Highlands and Manhattan, as of May 1.

"You can see it at the pump with the car. The same thing applies with the boats," General Manager David Stafford said. "It is unfortunate, but if it comes down, our fares come down accordingly."

The company is tacking on a $20 surcharge for a 40-trip ticket book, bringing the price to $626. A 10-trip ticket book will rise $8, to $195. A single-trip ticket will rise a dollar, to $23, and a round-trip ticket will cost $40, up $2.

Band has upper hand in its success

A band might have to own all the means of production, T-shirt factory included, to be more "indie" than Clap Your Hands Say Yeah. These five Brooklyn-based rockers wrote, recorded and released a self-titled debut in 2005 on their own self-titled label.

They did leave one task to outsiders: promotion. And a rapidly developing fan base was happy to do that work for free.

Buoyed by online word of mouth, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah quickly proved that indie-rock elitism and people-powered success could co-exist, at least in certain music-obsessed quarters of the Internet. The band's quirky, learned songs -- recalling both Talking Heads and Violent Femmes -- earned some of the most glowing reviews accorded any band born in the 2000s.

The debut also sold well enough to attract labels bearing advance money, global distribution, high-powered publicity.

Tom Ford's Big Leap: Manhattan Store Puts New Stamp On Luxury

Ford has spent the last 12 months sculpting a brand that is pure and perfect Tom, and he is now ready to unveil his vision with a three-story, 8,680-square-foot boutique opening at 845 Madison Avenue on Thursday.

But just what is Tom Ford about without the setting of a luxury leather goods house or le smoking? From the cast-bronze crocodile reception desk and chair in the entrance to the numerous bespoke ateliers, the butlers and maids roaming the luxurious space and clothing details such as a button-down pants cuff that can be unflapped for a quick brush, Ford is aiming to create a new version of luxury.

He is presenting a complete luxury brand from men's ready-to-wear, and custom-made tailoring to leather goods and other accessories made in a production deal with Ermenegildo Zegna as well as eyewear and fragrance.
